Westchester Fully Enclosed Kitchen Gardens With Raised Beds
May 22, 2025Case Study: A Cedar Enclosed Chef’s Garden With Integrated Irrigation
When a family’s son began training to become a chef, they wanted to support his passion in the most meaningful way possible: by creating an enclosed kitchen garden where he could step outside and harvest fresh vegetables, salad greens, and herbs—ingredients he could use immediately as he learned and refined his craft.
Led by Bruce Davison, this project by Kitchen Garden of Westchester focused on building a garden that was both beautiful and highly functional—designed for daily use, consistent production, and easy maintenance.
The Build: Cedar Craftsmanship, Designed to Last
The entire enclosure was built in cedar, chosen for its natural beauty, durability, and classic garden aesthetic. The result is a warm, timeless structure that feels intentional in the landscape—an enclosed space that protects the garden while creating a dedicated “outdoor pantry” just steps from the home.
Built-In Efficiency: Irrigation Installed From Day One
Because a productive kitchen garden depends on reliability, irrigation was installed as part of the build—a key element that supports consistent, healthy growth throughout the season. With irrigation in place, the garden is easier to manage, more resilient during hot stretches, and better suited to the regular harvesting rhythm of someone cooking often.

Designed for a Young Chef’s Everyday Harvest
This wasn’t a showpiece garden—it was created to be used. The layout was planned around what an aspiring chef needs most:
-
Fresh salad greens for daily prep
-
Flavor-forward herbs within easy reach
-
Seasonal vegetables ready to harvest at peak quality
It’s the kind of garden that encourages experimentation, supports creativity, and makes “farm-to-table” a real, everyday experience.
The Result: A Personal Kitchen Garden With Purpose
The finished cedar enclosure is more than a garden—it’s a tool for learning, a source of inspiration, and a steady supply of ingredients that connect the chef’s training to the land. Built with craftsmanship and care, this enclosed garden delivers beauty, productivity, and a story the family can grow with for years to come.
