On a large estate in Sleepy Hollow, Westchester, NY, the owners envisioned more than a beautiful backyard garden—they wanted a truly productive space that could help feed their large family and support the community through regular donations to local food pantries. They needed a garden that felt authentic to the property, could handle serious growing capacity, and would be as functional as it was striking.

That’s where Kitchen Garden of Westchester founder Bruce Davison came in.

The Vision: A Large-Scale, Farm-Style Kitchen Garden

This project centered around a large farm-style garden measuring approximately 70 by 110 feet—a substantial footprint designed for meaningful output season after season. The goal was to create an organized, protected growing environment that could support a wide variety of crops while maintaining a refined look appropriate for a distinctive estate setting.

A Standout Feature: Stained Wood Fence

One of the most unusual and defining elements of this project is the stained wood fence. While many garden enclosures lean utilitarian, this one was designed to feel intentional and architectural—blending durability with an elevated, warm aesthetic that complements the landscape and the estate’s character.

The enclosure provides a clear boundary for the garden, creating a sense of structure and permanence, while also helping protect the planting area and keep the space cohesive and easy to manage.

Custom Trellising for High-Production Growing

To maximize productivity and expand what the family could grow, Bruce created custom trellises throughout the layout—specifically designed to support vining vegetables and vertical growing. This allows for:

• Better airflow and plant health

• More growing capacity in the same footprint

• Easier harvesting and maintenance

• A cleaner, more organized look across the beds

From climbing crops to sprawling vines trained upward, the trellis system was built to be sturdy, practical, and aligned with the garden’s overall design.
